Feb. 20th: How to Write a How-To: Your Expert Opinion, from Avoiding a Bath to Acing a Test

 In this workshop participants will write a how-to guide to something that they know best, being comedic, genius, and/or instructive in the process.  The class will culminate with putting together a group collection of how-to’s, which is sure to be an indispensable guide to the most important things in life.

 

Feb. 27thKinetically Shipwrecked: From Idea to Words to Action

We’ll be exploring the process and experience of moving an idea from mind to paper and from paper to action, as would happen in a play or television show.  Disclaimer: We might encounter some sharks, pirates and bottle messages along the way.

 

Mar. 6thCooking for Cryptids: How to Write a Perfect Recipe for Your Favorite Mythical Creature Ever wonder what Bigfoot eats for Breakfast? What about the Loch Ness Monster’s favorite snack?  In this wacky workshop, you get to decide!  We’ll research our favorite mythical creature and decide what its favorite morsels may be and then compose recipes. The class will culminate with a “Cooking for Cryptids” collection you’ll get to take home.

 

Mar. 13th - Guerilla Writing: The Wonder of Words in Unexpected Places 

Think of all the words you read every day, without necessarily choosing to - signs, advertisements, news flashes  and more. This workshop will challenge you to use your own words, and the words of your favorite writers, to reach other readers in surprising ways.  Guerilla Writing is about placing lovely literary tidbits in unexpected places, where an eye might just read them and make someone smile.

Cost: $30 per session, or $100 for all 4 sessions  (Sign up for all 4 classes, or try just one!)

Poems from the Heart

February Vacation Week – Grades 4-8

February 17-21, from 9am-12pm

 

Poems from the Heart is a writing workshop designed to inspire students to use their observational skills, in conjunction with their heart, to write poems that matter.  Each day will include a balance of warm-up exercises, guided instruction, quiet independent writing time, group discussion, sharing and supportive feedback.  Students will…

•  read published poems, by favorite poets for enjoyment and inspiration

•  recognize potential ideas for their own poems

•  learn how to shape their idea into a poetic form using strong verbs and imagery

•  develop strategies for revising their poems

•  create their own poetry resource notebook

•  choose their best work to share with family and friends at the Author’s Reception on Friday

 

Instructor: Irene Hannigan – Teacher, Curriculum Specialist, and Author

 

Cost: $250 per student, includes all materials and snack
